TRAFFIC AND MARKET Traffic The fixed link across Storebælt has resulted in a number of significant changes in traffic flows between the regions. It has become easier, faster and cheaper to cross Storebælt compared to the time when the ferries were in service. Even in its first year of operation, vehicle traffic across Storebælt doubled while the number of train passengers rose by more than 50 per cent. Growth continued until 2008 and every year, vehicle traffic across Storebælt has increased far more than on other motorway sections in Denmark. A significant percentage of the traffic increase on Storebælt during the years 2005-2007 was due to a general reduction in toll charges in June 2005. Tolls were reduced by 20 per cent for passenger cars and by 5 per cent for lorries. In 2005, new discounts were rolled out, which targetted individual travellers at weekends. In 2009, for the first time since the bridge’s opening, vehicle traffic across Storebælt declined, which continued into 2010. This was primarily due to the hard winter and the general economic downturn. In 2011, traffic began to increase again. In 2013, traffic remained on a par with 2012, but increased in 2014 and 2015 by respectively 4.4 per cent and 4.6 per cent. In 2016, 12,437,748 vehicles crossed Storebælt, which is a rise of 4.7 per cent compared to 2015. Adjusted for the leap year day, the rise is 4.4 per cent. In 2016, the average daily traffic was 33,983 vehicles. By way of comparison, in 1997, which was the last full year of ferry operations, approximately 8,300 vehicles were transported across Storebælt.
